ASE Philip J. Wolfson Outstanding Teacher Award

The Philip J. Wolfson Outstanding Teacher Award will be given annually to individuals who are actively involved in surgical education and who are considered by their chair, peers, residents, and/or students to be outstanding teachers.  Nominees for these awards must possess the qualities of an outstanding teacher which include:  commitment to teaching, expert knowledge, innovation, enthusiasm and stimulation of interest, encouragement of problem solving, ability to provide feedback and effective evaluation, role modeling of professional characteristics, accessibility and openness to new ideas.  Documentation of teaching excellence must be provided, which may include but is not limited to:  teaching evaluation reports, dissemination of educational approaches and outcomes via presentations or publications, development of educational programs and media, and program evaluation reports.

Required application materials: 

Please provide a Statement of Educational Philosophy (2-3 pages written by applicant, limited to 1 page), as well as documentation of educational mastery and scholarship must be provided, which may include but is not limited to:

  1. Educational Portfolio that include documentation of the following: (1) Personal statement of educational philosophy (2) Attending educational development programs e.g. attending workshops, certification/degree programs (3) Educational productivity including: teaching activities; creation of or participation in educational curricula and/ or assessment schemes of learners (4) Educational research and scholarship (5) Education-related leadership positions within own institution (6) Leadership position in education-related organizations e.g. VP or chair of committees (7) Educational awards and honors (8) Mentoring and advising
  2. Letters of nomination by chair, dean, or program director.
  3. Letters of support and documentation of active participation from leaders in education-related organizations e.g. letters from committee chairs and above.
  4. Teaching evaluation reports.

ASE Distinguished Master Educator Award

The Distinguished Master Educator Award will be given annually to advanced career clinicians and/or MS/PhD educators who have demonstrated excellence as master educators recognized on the national and/or international level. In addition to recognized skills as an excellent teacher, nominees for this award will need an education portfolio with clear documentation of consistent educational scholarship and significant contributions to surgical education that are recognized to have national and/or international impact.

Required application materials:

Please provide a Statement of Educational Philosophy (2-3 pages written by applicant, limited to 1 page), as well as documentation of educational mastery and scholarship must be provided, which may include but is not limited to:

  1. Educational Portfolio that include documentation of the following: (1) Personal statement of educational philosophy (2) Attended educational development programs e.g. attending workshops, certification/degree programs (3) Educational productivity including: teaching activities; creation of or participation in educational curricula and/ or assessment schemes of learners (4) Educational research and scholarship (5) Education-related leadership positions within own institution (6) Documented leadership positions in national and / or international education-related organization (7) Educational awards and honors (8) Mentoring and advising
  2. Letters of nomination by chair or dean, at local institution and / or letters of support and documentation of major leadership positions from leaders in education-related national and / or international organizations to demonstrate how these individuals had an impact on local, national and / or international surgical education.
  3. Letters of support from individuals mentored by the nominees.

Eligibility
■ Must be a member of the Association for Surgical Education
■ Teacher/Educator of medical students, residents or faculty

Please note winners of  the Outstanding Teacher Award are ineligible for nomination for 3 years after receipt of award

Nomination Process
■ Nominations will be solicited by the ASE President on an annual basis
■ Nominations will be made by the department chair
■ Candidates may only be nominated for one ASE Award
■ Nominees for the Master Educator Award should have considerable national prominence as an educator, including scholarship and publications.
■ If the teaching portfolio is not included, the nomination will be rejected.

The Excellence in Surgical Education Awards have been established by the Association for Surgical Education to recognize exemplary performance by surgical educators.  The awards are funded by the Association for Surgical Education Foundation Past President’s Fund.  These awards are made to highlight and encourage scholarship in the area of surgical education.
