Session Information

Session Description
Description:
Are you in a rut because the critical teaching that you perform is not acknowledged in academia? Are you interested in learning how to add value to your everyday work by transforming it into innovative scholarship and research? This workshop will provide practical advice and simple hands-on activities to empower those who are just getting started in surgical education research. During the workshop, participants will develop, cultivate, and refine their own education research ideas. From discovering your research question to identifying interdisciplinary partners, navigating the IRB to figuring out how to pay for your study; don’t miss this opportunity to engage with experts, network with peers, and take a dive into surgical education research!
Target Audience: This interactive hands-on workshop is designed to empower surgical educators, surgeons, trainees, and other healthcare professionals who are seeking new ways to expand their horizons by transforming their everyday, critical educational work into high-impact scholarly projects and educational research.
Overview of Topics:
1. Tapping into Your Passions and Communicating Your Research Idea: The first half of the workshop is dedicated to the critical skill of (i) taking a scholarly approach to regular work and (ii) effectively communicating research ideas. Through a brief presentation and a hands-on activity, participants will explore techniques for refining and articulating their research idea. Working in pairs, participants will engage in a structured exercise to brainstorm and refine their ideas, learn how to formulate research questions, and receive feedback on their approach. This activity is designed to stimulate creative thinking and enhance participants’ ability to present their research ideas convincingly.
2. Taking the Next Steps Towards Implementing Your Idea: The second half of the workshop will focus on how to implement and conduct scholarly work from the research ideas that participants identified during the first half. Participants will learn how to identify interdisciplinary collaborators, navigate the IRB process, and find ways to fund their work. Hands-on activities and group work will be used to help participants become confident in overcoming common barriers to conducting research in surgical education.
Information for Participants:
This workshop will incorporate a mix of informational sessions and hands-on activities to provide a comprehensive and immersive learning experience. Each participant should bring their laptop for the workshop for the activities.
